Multi-Item Multi-Periods Capacitated Lot-Sizing Problem with Parallel Resources, Setups times and costs and Energy consumption: A case study

The demand for industrial products has increased considerably in the last two decennia, accompanied by a growth in energy consumption and CO2 emission. The industrial sector accounted for 38% of the total world final energy consumption in 2020 [1].The main energy consumption is in machinery and equipment, regardless of the type of energy used in the manufacturing process. Electricity demand is trending towards its fastest growth in over 10 years. It is expected to increase by 4.5% in 2021, or more than 1000TWh, which is about five times higher than the decline in 2020. This growth brings the share of electricity to 20% of the final energy demand. It is estimated that 80% of the increase in demand in 2021 is in developing economies [2]. Parallel to this growth in demand is the increase in energy prices.

In order to ensure the sustainability of the industrial company in a highly competitive Market, the company must control all of its costs while satisfying the demands of customers in order to achieve maximum profit. However, nowadays, the energy consumption is not always taken into consideration in the decision making at the same level as the production planning with an objective of minimizing mainly the production, storage and setups costs, while knowing that the cost of the electric energy is estimated around 17% of the fixed costs of the finished product. In this work, we are interested in an industrial context in which we integrate the optimization of energy consumption in the production planning process in order to obtain better profits. The planning model used is the capacitated lot sizing multi period, multi parallel and non identical resources, multi products with setup times and costs depending on the sequence.
